Do you have small children who do not do well with corn on the cob? Do you or your kids have braces? Are you getting sick of cutting the corn off the cob and not getting a clean cut? Well, with the Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper, you can "zip" off rows of corn individually and get each kernel instead of whatever the knife gets. Personally, I think this corn zipper was somewhat marginal but everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.
Kuhn Rikon is a company based out of Switzerland. Starting in the 1940's, their company has a great variety in their products. Their products range everywhere from pressure cookers to specialty products like Hotpan and the Durotherm. What I like most about the company is not only the fact that they make long lasting products, but they also have a line of "Kinderkitchen" tools. These are kid-sized kitchen tools that are perfect for your kids. I think cooking with your kids is very important and these are the perfect tools to carry out this activity.
There really are not a lot of features to this corn zipper. It is made of 100% stainless steel. It is a safe way to cut corn off the cob since the blade is not that accessible. Being dishwasher safe is mandatory in this day of age and this corn zipper is as well. The top of the zipper is rounded to fit the contours of the cob and help for easy "zipping." The Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper really is not that special unless you cut your corn off the cob all the time. When I had braces as a teenager for four years, I sure wish I had had a tool such as this one. It cuts the corn kernels off the cob and gets right down to the rind of the cob. I hated only getting half the kernels or just the tops with a knife. However, this corn zipper seems to do a good job. You just need to make sure that you apply enough pressure when zipping the corn off the cob, which will allow you to get all the way down to the rind. I do not think that I would really be using this that much. However, it would be great if you like to make a lot of cob salads or other salads that include corn. Using all that canned corn is not very healthy since it contains a lot of salt and such so being able to cut it off safely and easily would be very handy.
Again, unless you cut the corn off the cob all the time, this really would not be useful to you in the kitchen. I liked it and think it works well. Just make sure you are cutting down the row and not just anywhere. The blade is the perfect size for cutting one row of corn at a time so you get the full kernel. Therefore, if you want to get whole kernels of corn instead of just whatever the knife cuts, this is the tool for you. If not, just stick with the knife (it goes a lot faster than this). For just $12 USD (at Amazon.com), this Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper can be all yours.
